A pill. A drink. A food. A moment.
Anything which will simultaneously relieve and abandon that which ails us.
Only to fade. To pass. To return again.
All of us experience disconnection. All of us experience the pain and unrest which pushes us to find relief. And something amazing happens when we turn outward to seek the relief. We gain a blissful separation from the pain. A moment of ease. Release. Our bodies and minds untethered. We are free. For a moment.
We know however, somewhere deep within us, that the pain we escaped isn't really gone. We will feel it again. Yet, the momentary relief we seek and accept is worth the quiet understanding that the pain will return.
Return, the pain does, though not alone. What is amazing is that it always returns with a guest.
The guest tightly grips from inside our bodies. Encapsulates our souls. Imprisons our minds. The name for this guest passes all written literature and all spoken languages. It is experiential only. From deep within us, we feel the pain - deeper and bigger than the one that started it all.
Words of shame, guilt, fear, unworthiness scratch the surface of its power, but do it no justice. The power of this nameless guest seems to originate, not from itself alone, but from its ability to ignite all other pain inside of us. Stirring into a mass of emotions and sensations - fear, anxiety, hopelessness, unworthiness - deeper separation still.
Where is The Happiness Cure?
Do you understand? It is already within you. There is a power inside you. It does not overcome the pain you have experienced, it is simply bigger than the pain you experienced. You are not searching for something you don't have. You are seeking that which you already Know.
The Happiness Cure, in part, comes from resisting the urge to seek solutions outwardly. A pill. A drink. A food. A moment. Those are not solutions. Those are antecedents to deeper sorrow still.
When the urge comes, and it will, to seek that momentary relief from pain, do not judge. Simply come back inside. A breath. A caught thought. A prayer. A walk. The paths are many, which is the blessing. Find one. Engage it. You will be free.
